FAQ for the NYS Pistol Permit 18-Hour Class

What are the dates and times for the class?

The class is scheduled for January 18th and 19th, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM each day. Doors open at 8:00 AM.

Where is the class being held?

The class will take place at the Kodak Center (200 W Ridge Rd, Rochester, NY 14615).

How much does the class cost?

The full 18-hour class is offered at a special price of $149, available only for this session.

What does the class cover?

Topics include:

Basic firearm safety and maintenance

Safe storage and transportation

Firearm-specific NY laws

Situational awareness

Interacting with law enforcement

And much more!

Does this class include the live-fire portion?

Yes, the live-fire portion is included in the price. However, you will schedule a separate time to complete this portion after the classroom sessions. Rental, ammunition, and range time are all covered.

What if I live in a different county?

You must apply for your permit in the county where you live or work. This class fulfills the training requirement for most NYS counties. Some counties are much easier to work with than others. A full list of counties we’re approved in will be listed here:

Genesee

Monroe

Livingston

Steuben

Wayne

Wyoming

(We are working on getting a complete and updated list.)

Can I take the class before starting my permit application?

Please do not bring a completed copy of your permit packet. You must take the class and obtain a certificate before submitting your application. For any specific questions, it’s best to contact your county clerk. The issue with the NYS permit application process is that every county has its own requirements, making it difficult to provide a universal answer.

Will I have to fill anything out before the class?

Yes, we will send you an email with a waiver that is REQUIRED for everyone taking the class to complete before attending.

Can someone under 21 attend the class?

Yes, anyone can attend for educational purposes. However, the certificate is valid for only one year, and permits cannot be applied for until the age of 21.

Can I buy multiple tickets for people in my family?

Yes! We just ask that you send us their contact information (In the order comments or email it to us info@thefiringpinny.com, be sure to include your order #)  so we can provide them with their ticket and ensure they complete the required waiver.

What should I bring?

We will send you an email closer to the date of the class with specifics. In general, you should plan to bring:

Snacks

A belt

A notebook (optional)

A blank copy of your county’s permit application (not filled out)

Additionally, a waiver will be emailed to you prior to the class. This waiver is REQUIRED for all attendees and must be completed before class.

Does this class include meals?

We will provide turkey, ham, or vegetarian sandwiches. If you have any other dietary restrictions or preferences, you are welcome to bring your own lunch.

Additionally, we are not allowed to sell snacks at the center, so we STRONGLY encourage you to bring your own snacks or “munchies” to stay comfortable throughout the day.

How much is shipping, and when can I expect my ticket?

PLEASE DO NOT PAY FOR SHIPPING. SELECT IN-STORE PICK UP

We will provide a digital ticket to your email closer to the class date. There is nothing we have to ship to you, and we are unable to provide a refund on shipping.

Can I leave and come back?

We will provide frequent breaks during this long class. Unfortunately, the state requires you to complete a full 18 hours, and we are responsible for ensuring everyone receiving a certificate has completed the full duration.

A mandatory quiz will be handed out and collected to verify attendance for the required time (per state regulations). While you may leave, we strongly discourage it as we cannot guarantee re-entry, and no refunds will be provided for those who leave and cannot return.

Those who do not complete the required course will not be able to obtain a certificate of completion, which is necessary to apply for their permit.

Will this class guarantee I get a pistol permit?

Unfortunately, this class does not guarantee you will get your permit. Your county and the judge make that decision. If you are denied your permit, we strongly urge you to appeal the decision.

How long does it take to get my permit?

The law states it should not take more than six months, but in practice, it can range from a few months to up to a year. The timeframe depends entirely on your county.

How long do I have to fill out and submit my paperwork after the class?

You have one year from the date of completion to submit your paperwork. The certificate provided after the class is only valid for one year, so be sure to complete and submit your application within that timeframe.

What happens if I can’t attend after signing up?

Unfortunately, tickets are limited and non-refundable due to the high demand for this class. However, we will provide you with store credit to use for a future class. We encourage attendees to secure their spots only if they can commit to the dates.

Can I apply for my permit after completing this class?

Yes! Upon completion, you’ll have met the training requirements to submit your pistol permit application in NYS.

Do you offer other dates for this class?

Yes, we regularly host classes throughout the year at our Bergen location. However, this discounted price is only for the January 18th and 19th class at the Kodak Center.

Do you provide help with the permit application process?

While we cannot complete applications for you, we will gladly answer any questions during the class. For specific requirements, it’s best to consult your county clerk’s office.
